Questionnaire “Free Time” - Results of the Survey

  1. What country are you from?
Response Average Total
Italy 20% 62
Germany 13% 40
Greece 5% 17
Portugal 3% 9
Romania 11% 35
Spain 3% 9
Sweden 5% 16
Poland 17% 54
Bulgaria 23% 71

Total 100% 313/313

Participation of students in the survey:
As many as 313 students in different percentage took part in the survey about free time. We thank all of them for contributing with their participation. All participants are secondary school students, which is certainly relevant for the interpretation of the answers.

2. How many hours do you sleep at night?

Response Average Total
Usually about 10 hours. 11% 33
At least 8 hours. 56% 175
About 6 hours. 34% 105

Total 100% 313/313

56% of the students sleep 8 hour at night, that being almost minimum range of time for keeping up a good health. Another considerable percentage of students -34%- is situated under the recommended minimum time for night sleep, this lack of rest certainly affects their activities during the day.

3. Yourschool is situated at only two km. away from home. What means of transport doyou choose?
Response Average Total
I almost always walk. 37% 117
I take the bus, but I get off earlier and walk the rest of the way. 26% 81
I take the bus and get off at the last stop. 23% 73
I go to school by car. 13% 42

Total 100% 313/313

Regarding the means of transport, 37% of the students walk to school, which makes it a good result. Likewise good is the fact that 23% of the students take a bus but get off earlier and walk a good part of the way to school. This gives them a possibility to preserve a healthy status and to interact with other people. As many as 13% of the students drive their own car to school: this is probably a result of time management and of living quite a long way from school, however the result is not exactly encouraging, as the concerned students don’t take any physical exercise to get to school, face costs, pollute and risk having accidents. So, if you leave relatively close to school, shouldn’t you buy a season travel card and use public transport instead?

4. How many times a week do you practice at least 30 minutes of physical exercise?
Response Average Total
I go to the gym at least once a week. 48% 151
I don't do any physical exercise regularly, but I go out for a walk at least twice a week. 38% 118
I never take any exercise. 14% 44

Total 100% 313/313

The most significant information, and also the most negative, is 14% of the students never take any physical exercise. This could affect their health status, especially because of their disinterest in sustaining good physical condition.
38% of the students don’t regularly do physical exercises but go out at least twice a week for a walk. 48% go to the gym at least once a week, demonstrating their concern to maintain their health through periodical efforts. This is good enough, but the average of such students should hopefully increase.

5. How do you relax after a stressful day at school?

Response Average Total
I do something pleasant with my friends or family. 48% 150
I sit in front of my TV set with a bowl of chips and a glass of soft drink. 27% 83
I take a bath or sleep. 26% 80

Total 100% 313/313

Doing something pleasant with my friends or family seems to be most frequent ways of relaxing at home ( 48%) which means our students have active free time and improve the quality of personal relationships and grow self identity in their own family / social group.
The fact that as many as 26% take a bath or sleep indicates a deficiency and failure of nigh sleeping, though this may also be the direct result of an overwhelming day.

6. When did you last go to a rock/pop concert?
Response Average Total
Last week. 5% 17
Last month. 19% 60
Last year. 34% 107
Never. 41% 129
Total

Quite impressive the fact that as many as 41% of students have never gone to a rock/pop concert. This may be the result that many live quite far away from large cities where the most popular concerts are held. Good enough to realize that 41% of students are satisfied enough with listening to cds of their best singers/groups or watching concerts videos, rather than, for example, driving long ways at night, to attend concerts at all costs. Wise young people!

7. How much time do you spent clubbing?
Response Average Total
I don't usually go / I rarely go. 57% 178
Once a week. 35% 111
Twice – three times a week. 8% 24

Total 100% 313/313

Again a very high percentage of students provided a rather unexpected result: 57% don’t usually go to discos. As previously stated this is good finding, considering students living long distances from discos, who do not endanger themselves with driving, or even worse with drinking and driving.

8. How often do you watch TV?
Response Average Total
Sometimes, when I am interested in something specific. 38% 119
Pretty often, I like watching TV in general. 37% 116
Every day, I can't live without the TV. 25% 78

Total
313/313

Quite alarming the fact that as many as 25% of students declare they can’t live without tv. We do hope they are nevertheless able to choose (also) good programmes, which are undoubtedly broadcast everywhere

9. When I have free time…
Response Average Total
I always organize it; I know what to do. 21% 67
I don't have a program, but I normally spend it with friends and family. 51% 160
I never organise it, that is why I call it "free"! 27% 86

Total 100% 313/313

More than a half from the students answering the questionnaire ( 51%) don’t have a programme and they would rather spend their free time with their friends and family. Maybe the necessity of organizing one’s free time is not a practice and this lead to more wasted time, even when it’s free.

10. When did you last go to the theatre?
Response Average Total
last week. 4% 11
last month. 19% 60
last year. 53% 167
never. 27% 84

It’s rather demoralizing that 27% of students have never been to the theatre, not even with their own classmates and teachers. Why don’t you arrange a class visit to a theatre soon?

11. When did you last go to the opera?
Response Average Total
Last week. 1% 4
Last month. 6% 18
last year. 16% 50
Never. 78% 245

Again and alarming result: as many as 78% have never been at the Opera. We understand it is not exactly popular with young people, but trying it at least once may be an important cultural experience. Propose that to your parents and see…you may also get discount tickets reserved for students.

12. At the week-end, most of the time:
Response Average Total
I meet my friends or I go out with your family, friends, etc... 65% 202
I wait and see how the others organise their time (friends, family, partner). 12% 39
I stay at home, to relax. 19% 58
I always have something left from school. 4% 14

Total 100% 313/313

Probably the indirect answer is most of the free time is weekend time, when students have enough time to spend with family or friends (65%). It ‘s time for family / girlfriend-boyfriends/ friends, for personal social and emotional needs. Only a few percentage seem to have to catch up with homework, so it seems weekend time is generally largely enjoyed.

13. How often do you surf the internet?
Response Average Total
Sometimes, only when I need something specific. 16% 51
Pretty often, I enjoy surfing the net. 27% 83
Every day, I can't live without surfing the net. 57% 179

Total 100% 313/313

The percentage of 57% who cannot live without surfing the internet is medical classified as “ internet addiction “, a disorder that must be observed and corrected. It is one of the most frequent disorder of the modern world, affecting health and communication.

14. Motto: "Free time does not mean the end of work, but work means the end of free time"
Response Average Total
I agree completely. 45% 140
I partially agree. 46% 145
I disagree. 9% 28

Total 100% 313/313

45% agree that free time does not mean the end of work, but work means the end of free time; this confirms the general understanding that our society is too much based on work and little on free time. Only 9% seem not to be affected by this lack of free time: you lucky people! Why don’t you tell us the secret of your lifestyle?

15.How long do you take to do your homework or study on an average day:

Response Average Total
from 0 to 1 hour. 40% 126
from 1 to 2 hours. 42% 131
more than 2 hours. 20% 64

40% seem to commit themselves to homework only one hour a day. If this is good in terms of length of available free time, don’t you thing you are neglecting school a little?

16.About measuring time, what do you think about this sentence:

Response Average Total
I completely agree. 50% 155
I partially agree. 46% 144
I disagree. 6% 19

Supposedly this was a good finding: 50% can enjoy life and consequently free time, regardless of the actual time they can invest. Do carry on this way!

17. Please, write a text (minimum20 words) starting with the sentence below:
"To me free time means...

Here are some sample replies…

  • Free time is the most beautiful thing in life, is what we should have as a rule and always!
  • Laughing it's the real money of the life so all the people can be rich!
  • living my life.
  • More time for developing my interests and meeting my best friends.
  • No homework and just do thinks I like. Don't feel any pressure.
  • …that I don't need to check my watch.
  • The moments I can do whatever I want, without anyone boring me with homework, work or housework.
  • ..those moments of my life when I can think about myself.
  • to me free time means when I relax whatever I do.
  • to me free times means living without duties.
  • To me free time means hanging out, enjoying the day, and doing what you can to do what you want.
  • To me free time means liberation from doing the things I HAVE (and not necessarily like) to do.
  • To me free time means using it in order to create a harmonious personality.
  • To me free time means that I could do something that I really want to do when I want.
The survey and the feedback on free time was created and elaborated by teacher Chiara Pasquini, ITI Marconi school Italy

Anul acesta, in perioada 4-8 mai, in Romania si in alte tari participante in cadrul Programului de Invatare pe tot Parcursul Vietii, se va organiza “Saptamana Comenius”.
1. Ce va place la proiectele scolare europene?
2. Ce ati invatat despre tarile voastre partenere?
3. Ati gasit noi prieteni?
4. S-a schimbat ceva in viata voastra scolara?
Va rugam sa scrieti pe blog cartea postala in limba engleza.
